Why is getting tested important?
Many sexually transmitted infections (STIs) don’t cause symptoms, so it’s possible to have one without knowing it. Regular STI testing can help detect infections early, making them easier to treat and helping reduce the risk of passing them on to others.

What can you expect from a STI screening or test?
When you arrive, simply check in with reception before your appointment. During your consultation, the GP will ask you some questions pertaining to your health overall as well as specific questions about your sexual health, to understand which tests may be appropriate for you. Your GPs is here to support you, not judge you. Everything you discuss is confidential.
Your GP will explain which tests they recommend and why. Depending on the type of test, self-collection may be available if you would prefer. You’re always in control of your healthcare. Your GP will explain your options, and you can decide which tests you’re comfortable having. Once your samples have been collected, they’ll be sent to the pathology laboratory for testing.
On-site Pathology Services
Medical Hub @ RMIT has a dedicated Australian Clinical Labs collection centre located within the clinic. If your GP recommends blood tests or other pathology testing, you can often have your samples collected immediately after your appointment without needing to travel elsewhere.
Australian Clinical Labs is a separate pathology provider, and any pathology fees are determined by them.
Follow-up Appointments
If any follow-up is needed, our nursing or administration team will contact you to arrange another appointment to discuss your results. If you have any questions while waiting for your results, please contact our reception team.
Follow-up appointments will be billed as a separate consultation in accordance with our standard fees.
What are the costs involved with an STI screening?
RMIT Students
If you’re an eligible RMIT student attending a student appointment, your consultation may be billed through Medicare, Medibank or AHM, depending on your enrollment and eligibility. When booking, please ensure you select “student” to avoid any unwanted fees.
All other Patients
Standard consultation fees apply for non-student appointments. Fees generally range from $100–$160, depending on the length of your consultation. Medicare rebates will reimburse part of the consultation cost, and many Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) providers will also reimburse a portion of the total cost. If the doctors refer you to a pathology centre for testing, there may be an out-of-pocket cost at the discretion of the pathology clinic you choose to go to. These fees are not associated with our clinic.
