What is telehealth?
A telehealth consultation is an appointment with your GP by phone or video call.
During a telehealth consultation, your GP can discuss your symptoms or health concerns, provide medical advice and where appropriate, arrange prescriptions, pathology tests or referrals.
Telehealth may not be suitable for every health concern. If your GP needs to examine you in person, they may ask you to attend the clinic or recommend another appropriate health service.
Currently, Medical Hub @ RMIT is offering Telehealth consultations over the phone and via video conferencing.
What happens during a telehealth consultation?
Your telehealth consultation will be similar to an appointment at the clinic. Your GP will ask about your symptoms, medical history and any other information needed to assess your health and recommend the next steps.
Depending on your needs, this may include treatment advice, a prescription, pathology testing, a referral or a follow-up appointment.
Many patients choose telehealth for follow-up appointments or to discuss test results, as it can be a convenient alternative to attending the clinic in person.
How much does a telehealth consultation cost?
Telehealth consultations are charged at the same rate as in-person consultations.
If you have attended the Medical Hub @ RMIT in person within the past 12 months, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate, just as you would for a standard in-person consultation.
If you have not attended the clinic in person within the past 12 months, you will need to pay the full private consultation fee and will not be eligible for a Medicare rebate for your telehealth appointment.
Bulk billing and direct billing to eligible OSHC insurers are available for eligible patients, as outlined above.
What can I discuss during a telehealth consultation?
Many health concerns can be managed by telehealth, particularly when a physical examination is not required.
Telehealth appointments may be suitable for:
- Repeat prescriptions
- Repeat pathology requests
- Medical certificates
- Mental health consultations (excluding Mental Health Treatment Plans)
- Reviewing test results
- Referrals
- Ongoing management of chronic conditions
- STI screening pathology requests
If you’re unsure whether telehealth is appropriate for your health concern, contact the clinic on 03 9999 2778, and our reception team can help you choose the most suitable appointment.
