What is an IUD?
An Intrauterine Device (IUD) is a small contraceptive device placed inside the uterus to help prevent pregnancy.
Depending on the type of IUD you choose, it can provide effective contraception for 5 to 10 years. There are both hormonal and non-hormonal (copper) IUD options available, and your GP can help you decide which is most suitable for your needs.
What is Implanon?
Implanon is a small contraceptive implant placed just under the skin of your upper arm. It provides highly effective contraception for up to three years before it needs to be replaced or removed. The procedure is quick and is performed under local anaesthetic in the clinic.
How do I book an IUD or Implanon Appointment?
Before having an IUD or Implanon inserted, you’ll first book a consultation with Dr Ben Ooi. If you’re booking online, you can choose a standard consult. If you’re booking over the phone, let our reception team know you’d like to book an IUD or Implanon pre-consultation.
During this appointment, your GP will discuss your contraception options, explain the procedure, answer any questions, and help you decide whether an IUD or Implanon is right for you.

What should I expect during an IUD insertion appointment?’
The insertion procedure is performed in the clinic and usually takes around 10-15 minutes, although you should allow additional time for preparation and recovery. Your healthcare professional will first examine you to assess the size and position of your uterus. A speculum, similar to the instrument used during a cervical screening test, is then gently inserted into the vagina. The IUD is carefully placed inside the uterus. Your doctor will explain each step of the process and answer any questions you may have before proceeding.
